Interview with Dalton James Thursday 8-19-21

Dalton is a 28-year-old software engineer and is a new daddy to a little girl. Most of his day is spent behind a desk staring at a screen, like most of the people in today’s high-tech world.

He made it clear to us that looking good was not his motive to hiring a private trainer, but rather, it was all about feeling good.

Dalton began training with Eric, our Master Trainer at Soul Warrior, in Feb 2021 with a primary goal of evening out his legs after having an ACL knee repair surgery. After surgery and rehab, the injured leg was weaker than the other and for Dalton, this was not looking like a favorable situation.   After he attended all his physical therapy sessions he tried to work out on his own. It lasted about 4 weeks before he realized that he was not able to figure out what he should be doing to continue rehabbing the knee and the muscles around the injured knee. He needed to gain strength in his injured knee, and prevent the other knee from becoming weak as well.

He inquired about working with a private trainer after talking to some of his buddies at the front desk of ProFitness.

Within a few weeks of beginning his training with Eric, he was started to see why Eric was getting to know about his strengths and weaknesses little by little. He currently works out with Eric weekly and gets some guidance with what he can do on his own to help rehab himself, but he does not really like the gym atmosphere, preferring outdoor activities such as ultimate Frisbee and Basketball. Dalton loves the accountability aspect of private training, and it gets him in the gym, doing what is best for his knee and overall strength.

Preventative maintenance is the lesson that Dalton learned from his work with Eric and he would advise all outdoor athletes to seek a trainer to understand how to prevent getting injuries.

Dalton told us, “I really like that Eric cares about his clients. He is accessible by text or phone if I have any issues or problems, he is available to talk.” Eric also reminds Dalton that he needs to keep his nutrition in line with the amount of energy he expends on outdoor physical activities. “I like the fact that he was asking me if I was eating enough protein.” Dalton has a fairly good idea about what to eat in general to keep fueled, but he likes the fact that he can ask Eric about nutrition and he is so knowledgeable.

Dalton recently played 6 hours of ultimate Frisbee on a weekend in August, 2021. Based on his training with Eric, he knew to bring all the key nutrition items with him so he could play for that length of time. It is amazing how quickly he has recovered from the torn ACL and knows that the private training has helped him tremendously with the recovery process.

Coaches know how to lift and he does not, so he knew his limitations in the gym, learned from high school coaches about 10 years ago when the coaches were not that well versed on weight training techniques and how to properly lift so you would not get injured.

Wife loves cardio only like most women but he definitely sees why women’s strength training for the core is important as he just had a baby and saw what his wife went through during pregnancy. He understands how important the core is to overall wellness.

He loves the accountability and when spend $$$ on training, you stay accountable to yourself.

He would advise all outdoor athletes to see trainer before you get injured. Preventative maintenance is so important.
